Quilting as Art and Spiritual Practice is a half-day experiential retreat that values process over product and presence over perfection. Through hand stitching, participants explore quilting as a contemplative art form—one that slows the body, focuses the mind, and opens participants' inner space for intuition and meaning to arise.
The retreat invites participants into an embodied relationship with materials and rhythm. Repetitive stitching becomes a meditative act, allowing the maker to settle into a state of deep attention and creative listening. Quilting is offered not as a craft exercise but as a mindful, reflective practice where art emerges through patience, care, and sustained engagement with the creative process.
The retreat is designed for adults seeking spiritual connection, deep rest, and creative expression without the pressure of performance.
It is especially suited for:
• Individuals seeking grounding and spiritual connection
• People interested in exploring the art of quilting by hand
• Folks looking for a new creative outlet.
Maxine Fuller is a self-taught hand quilter with nearly fifteen years of experience creating usable art for adults and children. She began quilting as a way to honor her grandmother and the African American women she grew up around—women whose creativity, care, and resourcefulness shaped both family life and cultural memory. Maxine soon realized that the process of designing quilts and quiet hand stitching was meditation, calming her mind and body.
Maxine's quilting practice is rooted in meditation, prayer, and spiritual connection. Through repetitive stitching and handwork, Maxine enters a state of quiet attentiveness in which intuition and spirit guide the process, allowing each quilt to unfold slowly and deliberately. Every quilt is created with intention, honoring fabric, color, and stitch as vessels for art making, presence, healing, and reflection. Maxine views quilts not only as functional objects and works of art, but as spaces of connection—between maker and user, past and present, spirit and form. Her quilts are art meant for daily use, offering warmth, grounding, and a sense of care, comfort, and cultural connection.
All basic materials are provided, including fabric, simple patterns, needles and thread, scissors, seam rippers, straight pins, and marking tools. Participants are welcome to bring personal fabric, tools, or a journal if they wish.
No prior quilting or sewing experience is required. Experienced quilters are also welcome.
